Step 1 to a Healthier Lifestyle
Exercise
After years of research and experience, I feel that regular daily exercise
is one of the most important factors in improving health and preventing disease.
I strive for one hour a day, but start with 15 minutes a day. Walking
is good (treadmill or outside). Yoga is excellent for the body.
I recommend the following videos: “Yoga for the Young at Heart”
by Susan Winter Ward (A 45 minute gentle yoga practice designed for
seniors. Excellent for beginners. Gentle but very effective. Done 3 times a
week, you will notice your body change. Makes you feel wonderful.) “A.M.
And P.M Yoga for Beginners” by Rodney Yee. (Short 15 minute workouts
for morning, stress relief, and evening. Easy to start doing 15 minutes every
morning.) Find a type of exercise that you enjoy and look forward to. It can
be anything.
Increase Fruits and Vegetables
As a general rule, each meal should consist of 80% vegetables.
Eat less meat and carbohydrates (potatoes, corn and beans are carbohydrates).
Eat several fruit a day. Try to eat fruits and vegetables that are in season.
In winter, eat cooked fruits and vegetables (such as apples, pears, carrots,
celery). In winter, avoid tropical fruits and vegetables (citrus fruits).
Drink pure water
Purified water using reverse osmosis is good. Make sure you still have trace
minerals in your water. Don't drink distilled water without trace minerals added.
Educate Yourself
Read the book: “Eating Alive” by Jon Matsen. It
explains how the digestive system works. It explains the importance of taking
in nutrition, absorbing that nutrition into your blood stream, and eliminating
toxins from the body – when our body does not complete this process properly,
illness and disease results – when our body functions in this way properly,
powerful self-healing occurs.
Sugar is Poison
So much of what we eat has sugar hidden in it. Many foods bought at the grocery
store contain sugar but are not required to list it in the ingredients. Be aware
of everything you eat during the day that has small amounts of sugar in them.
Avoid all forms of sugar, as you would poison.
Avoid Processed Food
There are many reasons why processed or packaged foods are bad for you, including:
sugar content, chemicals , coloring and preservatives, destroying the nutrition
during the mechanical processing of such foods. Try to cook more of your food
from scratch using whole fresh fruits and vegetables. Cook extra and freeze
for fast meals. Learn to eat raw fruits, vegetables and nuts as snacks and travel
foods.
Read and understand the Labels on EVERYTHING
Know what you're putting into your body. Be aware of the glucose
and high-fructose corn syrup (forms of sugar) on food labels, as well as all
the chemicals, coloring, flavoring.
