I have read and learned a lot about health. I used many different alternative therapies and diets. I have been severely chronically ill for a period of three years. I am now very healthy. Here's some quick tips:
Food combining: Do not mix carbohydrates and proteins. They are digested by different enzymes which neutralize each other. If they are eaten together, digestion is slower and requires more energy to accomplish. Ever feel tired after a meal? Try separating your carbohydrates and proteins.
Sugar is poison: The Industrial Age, science and technology has brought us a whole new world of toys and treats but what is there affect on our body? The majority of food in the grocery store is now highly processed, full of chemicals, and refined sugar. God created whole foods for a reason. Our body functions optimally when sugar is introduced in whole food where it must be broken down slowly over time through digestion. Whole fruit is better than juices. Prefer minimal processing, whole grains, and whole foods. Food processing eliminates most of the foods nutritional value and introduces refined sugar into our system too quickly and in too large doses for our body to control. I try to avoid any food with sugar (glucose, fructose, corn syrup) in it. I prefer whole fruit to juices. I minimize honey and maple sugar as well.
Happiness: I think one of the most important factors in physical health (if not THE most important factor) is your attitude and emotional state. Are you doing what you want to be doing? Are you fulfilling your dreams? Do you love your job? Does life excite you? Will you have regrets if you died tomorrow? Are you living the life you want to be living? Life is short, don't procrastinate. Sit down. Think about what you want, where you are, and fix it. You have nothing to lose, nothing to fear. Do you have healthy relationships in your life? Are you receiving the love you need? You must give love in order to receive love (trust me, try it, it works!). Force yourself to physically smile - it releases endorphins. Love and happiness is the greatest cure for most physical health problems.
Dairy causes calcium deficiency: Believe it or not: the dairy that is supposed to be adding calcium to your diet is probably what is causing your calcium deficiency. Dairy (milk, cheese, ice cream) when eaten in combination with protein requires more calcium to digest than it provides. North Americans have the highest rate of osteoporosis. Certain tribes with no dairy in their diet and an average woman nursing nine babies during her lifetime never experience osteoporosis. Women in North America should begin taking Calcium supplements at age 20 for the rest of their lives. Make sure your supplement has Vitamin D and Magnesium in it. Consult a physician or naturopath regarding which forms of Calcium are more absorbable. Note: Some Calcium supplements contain forms of Calcium which cannot be absorbed by your digestive system. The best source of calcium is sesame seeds (tahini) or green leafy vegetables. Calcium deficiency causes pre-menstrual syndrome. When I eliminated dairy from my diet, my mentrual cramps dramatically reduced.
Purified water: This sounds disgusting but must be known. With so many women taking birth control pills, they are passing a lot of estrogen through their urine. The estrogen is not filtered out of tap water. This increase of estrogen in our drinking water (and our food which grows using this same water) is causing very harmful health problems in both men and women. Studies have shown that this increase in estrogen is turning male fish into female fish (producing eggs). Estrogen pollution is also found in pesticides, herbicides, air pollution, and most importantly plastic. Yes, most plastic products are leaking estrogen-like chemicals (your computer, bookshelves, phone, tupperware). We're in trouble folks. Tap water contains chlorine and fluoride which cause health problems over the long-term. Drink filtered water using reverse osmosis with trace minerals added.
Chiropractors: I recommend chiropractors for severe acute pain (meaning one-time bad pain you can't ignore). I do not recommend chiropractors for chronic back pain (long-term problems with back pain) and I do not recommend regular visits to the chiropractor. For chronic back pain, I recommend daily yoga (don't have the time? try "a.m. yoga for beginners" it's 20 minutes, there are no excuses). I also recommend "Yoga for the Young at Heart". Daily neck and back stretches will also reduce chronic back pain (ask a chiropractor or doctor for instructions on appropriate stretches). Also drink at least 8 - 10 glasses of water a day.
