HOMESCHOOLING

We have decided to home-school our children after having read several books on the subject. The facts of the matter are: they will get a better education than in public school, cheaper than private education, at a pace and with content tailored to each child, and it won't take much extra time out of our schedule to do it. It is easy to do and does not require special training to do it well. So far we are teaching our two-year-old son to read, do math, play chess and speak French. He has also mastered many other skills and we are confident that so far he is ahead of his peers in his knowledge and understanding. We are currently using The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential's methods of teaching babies to read and do math as explained by Glenn Doman in his books: How To Teach Your Baby to Read, and How To Teach Your Baby Math. We are also applying the Institute's principles to teaching Justice chess as well. We are also using Elizabeth Hainstock's book Teaching Montessori in the Home. But most of all we look at every moment in the day as a teaching opportunity and help Justice explore things he shows interest in. He helps with cooking, laundry, dishes and house cleaning. He is also excellent with construction vehicle terminology.

Our son is now almost three years old and is very interested in learning facts about dinosaurs. Our second child Haifa was born in December of 2000 and started her reading program at the age of 2 1/2 months.

Justice formally began his homeschooling one week before his 3rd birthday (I just couldn't wait). He often says he loves "doing school". He quickly learned how to write and is now working on learning to read using phonics. We have decided to use the Classical Education method with our children.
